One of the worst and most common problems we encounter while driving our vehicles are flying insects.  It’s an unavoidable problem and for some geographical areas, you experience seasonal bug problems where millions of bugs hatch and then fly around as a part of their mating ritual.

Bug guts are acidic and when bugs impact onto your car’s paint finish, if not neutralized and removed in a timely manner, the acids are corrosive enough they will eat away portions of your car’s clearcoat paint and when this happens, the only true repair is to repaint the affected panels.  Clear paint protection film or PPF, used on the front of cars to protect them from rock chips is even more prone to damage from the acids in bugs and for this reason it’s even more important to remove dried bug splatter as soon as possible.

This is a professional grade panel wipe

Generically these types of products are called panel wipes. As the name implies, you use these types of product to wipe down a panel. The idea being to chemically dissolve and remove any polishing oils or other substances left on the surface of car paint typically after any paint correction steps that have been performed.

Normal steps for a full exterior detail

When it comes to applying a conventional car wax or synthetic sealant, the normal steps include,

1. Wash and dry the car.
2. Clay the paint if there are any above surface bonded contamination detected via the Baggie Test.
3. Compound and polish the paint to remove any below surface defects like swirls and scratches.
4. Apply a car wax or synthetic paint coating.

After step 3, you can simply move onto the final step, which is applying a car wax or synthetic paint sealant without doing anything else to the paint. Just apply the wax or sealant, wait for it to dry to a haze, wipe off the dried product and you’re done.

With ceramic paint coatings – there’s an extra step

With a ceramic paint coating there is an EXTRA STEP required before installing the coating and this is the most important step because the product you use must be strong enough to remove any residual polishing oils or other substances but safe enough to prevent dulling or marring the paint.

The normal steps to install a ceramic coating include,

1. Wash and dry the car.
2. Clay the paint if there are any above surface bonded contamination detected via the Baggie Test.
3. Compound and polish the paint to remove any below surface defects like swirls and scratches.
4. Use a panel wipe to chemically strip each body panel to prep it for the coating.
5. Install the ceramic coating section by section, panel by panel.

* Step 4 is the extra step. Herein lies the problem.

Clearcoat paints are scratch-sensitive - Generally speaking, modern clearcoat paints tend to be harder than traditional single stage paints like lacquers and enamels used before 1980. While most clearcoat paints are harder than old school paints, they still scratch very easy. And because the clearcoat is like a WINDOW to the color coat, (called the basecoat), any swirls, scratches, scuffs, or towel marring – shows up like a sore thumb. This is because when you scratch something clear, the scratch is opaque or whitish in color and any medium to dark colored basecoats will reflect these whitish scratches back to our eyes making them very easy to see.

Most solvents are not good lubricants - The historic problem with most panel wipe or paint surface prep sprays, are the solvents used to do the actual work of dissolving polishing oils and other foreign substances are NOT good lubricants.

Now let me tie this together - If you take a conventional panel wipe, (a product that’s not a good lubricant), and wipe down a scratch-sensitive clearcoat, it’s really easy and also very common for this process to put towel marring back into the paint you just invested hours into buffing to perfect. In case you don’t know, towel marring is the fluffy way to describe light towel scratches.

See the problem? You need to use a panel wipe to prep the paint for the coating but using the panel wipe risks putting scratches back into the paint.

So, after you've invested hours into doing all the prep work, this includes washing, drying, claying, compounding, and polishing, the paint is now PERFECT – and the next step is to take a panel wipe and scratch the paint. Not good.

Here’s the good news… 3D isn’t no conventional car wax company and 3D WIPE isn’t any old conventional panel wipe. It’s better because 3D’s chemists are the best in the industry.

3D WIPE is a pro-grade product that is formulated to strip the paint without marring the paint at the same time. 3D Wipe is a water-based panel wipe that uses highly refined and filtered water as a base. What if I don’t see any color changing effect? - After spraying your car’s wheels or any of your car’s body panels, if you do not see any color changing taking place in the spray on the surface, this is even better news. It means there is no contamination and more important – this means there was no corrosion taking place on the finish of your car’s wheels or on the exterior paint. Believe it or not, even though everyone loves to see the color-changing effect, also called the bleeding-effect, it’s better for your wheels and paint to see nothing at all. And now you have the confidence to move onto the next step knowing your car’s wheels and paint are clean and free from any chemical contamination.

What does it do? - After spraying onto a surface, it seeks out and dissolves a wide spectrum of chemical contamination so that it can then be washed and/or rinsed off your vehicle’s wheels and/or body panels. Including,

2. Iron Contamination
3. Traffic Pollution
4. Industrial Fallout
5. Road Film

When do you use it? - For cleaning brake dust off your car’s wheels and also for chemically decontaminating the body panels that make up your car’s exterior.

Wheels - Use 3D BDX anytime you wash your car. Every time you use your brakes, the friction between the brake pads and the brake rotors creates brake dust as your brakes wear down with each use. This brake dust builds-up on your car’s wheels. Because wheels naturally become dirty with brake dust it’s normal to use a brake dust remover every time you wash your car regardless of the type of wash process you use.

Body Panels – the exterior of your car - There are two categories of car washing, Prep Wash and Maintenance Wash. Generally speaking, you only use 3D BDX when doing a Prep Wash and skip the 3D BDX step for body panels when doing a Maintenance Wash.

What’s the difference between a Prep Wash and a Maintenance Wash? - Great question, I’m glad you asked.

Prep Wash - A prep wash is where you are washing a neglected car to get it surgically clean before doing any paint correction steps. Paint correction steps can include things like,

• Mechanical decontamination with detailing clay or the 3D Nano Pad or 3D Nano Prep Towels.
• Dedicated compounding and polishing steps with 3D compounds and polishes
• Doing one-step paint correction with products like 3D SPEED.

When doing any type of paint correction, anything already on the surface of the painted body panels is going to be abraded off, conventional car waxes, synthetic paint sealants and ceramic paint coatings. For this reason, it’s recommended to use 3D BDX for a Prep Wash.

Maintenance Wash - A maintenance wash is a wash process intended to clean cars already detailed, in excellent condition and regularly maintained. As such, there’s less need for extreme cleaning processes and products like iron removers and chemical decontamination sprays. In fact, the whole point of a Maintenance Wash is to be as careful and NON-invasive as possible so as to avoid marring the paint during the process as well as preserving whatever the protective coating was chose to seal the paint surface, be it a ceramic coating, conventional car wax or synthetic paint sealant.

Body Panels - When doing a maintenance wash, the type of LSP or Last Step Product used on the painted body panels is a key deciding factor as to whether to use 3D BDX or not. 

Cars with Ceramic Coatings - A quality ceramic coating properly installed is chemical resistant, at least a lot more chemical resistant than a conventional car wax or synthetic paint sealant. Thus, if you feel the need to check for or ensure there is no iron or chemical contamination on your car’s finish it’s perfectly okay to use 3D BDXon a ceramic coated car as the ingredients in this product will not interfere with the coating.

Cars with Conventional Car Waxes or Synthetic Paint Sealants - The downside to using conventional car waxes and synthetic paint sealants are they are not near as chemical resistant as a ceramic coatings. Thus, using iron removers and chemical contamination sprays will tend to remove these types of sacrificial protective coatings pre-maturely. It’s just the nature of the beast. So generally speaking, you don’t use iron removers when doing a maintenance wash on cars protected with car waxes and/or synthetic paint sealants.

Why use 3D BDX over other options? - Most iron removers are formulated for a single purpose and that is to remove iron or in scientific lingo, Fe or ferrum, which is Latin for iron.

3D BDX is a more complicated product. It’s formulated to safely dissolve and remove all types of iron contamination, which includes brake dust and dissolved iron in our water supplies, both city water and well water but 3D BDX goes further and also safely removes other common forms of chemical contamination on vehicles including, brake dust, iron contamination, traffic pollution, industrial fallout, and oily road film.

The science behind why you want a high foaming upholstery and carpet shampoo

One of the reasons everyone enjoys buying a brand-new car is because it’s new, meaning the outside is clean and shiny and even more noticeable - the inside is so clean and sterile. No one else has soiled the seats, the arm rests, the steering wheel, the center console, or the carpets. Part of the reason the inside of a brand-new car feels luxurious is because it’s so fresh and clean. It’s a universal phenomenon that people from all walks of life, describe a new car as having that new car smell. And this is because – everything is still spic-and-span clean, kind of like an operating room in a hospital – everything looks and smells surgically clean. 

It’s this clean factor, this overpowering perception that the inside of a new car is 100% completely clean and germ-free that makes getting into a new car so inviting, so welcoming. You want to get inside of a brand-new car because you know it’s so clean.

Sad news is, we can’t all simply go down to the dealership and buy a new car just because the inside of our current car loses that new car smell and starts to show signs of normal, day-in, day-out wear-n-tear.

What we can do is clean it. And the parts or areas of a car that get the dirtiest are any part or area that is made from some type of fabric, upholstery, or carpeting. Cleaning fabric, upholstery or carpeting is challenging because unlike smooth hard surfaces, where the dirt and grime is sitting on the surface and easy to wipe-off, with fabric, upholstery or carpeting, the dirt and grime can be both on the material and in the material. 

Another difficult aspect of cleaning fabric, upholstery or carpeting is once any liquids penetrate past the outer surface, or get behind or under the surface of the material being cleaned – how do you then remove any excess moisture? You need to remove any liquids or moisture, or this can lead to the formation of mold and mildew where you cannot see it or reach it to clean it.

This is why we made 3D’s Upholstery & Carpet Shampoo to be a high foaming cleaner. Foam is basically suds or bubbles. Bubbles are the product (a liquid) enveloped around pockets of air and it is these foam bubbles that sit on TOP of the surface where you want them so you can work them against the surface of the material and then wipe-off the residues.

This simple foam structure of the cleaner helps you to effectively clean the material while avoiding getting too much liquid into whatever is behind the surface of the fabric, upholstery, or carpeting.

In the case of cloth seats, there is foam cushioning under the top layer of fabric. Foam absorbs liquids. If you put a straight liquid cleaner on to the surface of a cloth-covered foam seat, a lot of the liquid will saturate past the cloth surface and go into the foam. Now the problem becomes, how can you get this liquid it out? Unremoved liquids are what can lead to mold and mildew issues inside your car’s seats. This same principal applies to carpets and even cloth-covered door panels, arm rests or center consoles.

Diluting 3D Upholstery & Carpet Cleaner

3D’s Upholstery & Carpet Cleaner is sold as a concentrate. Before using this product, you must dilute it. The dilution ratio for general cleaning is a ratio of 1:16 – or 1 part concentrate to 16 parts water. The number 16 in the expressed ratio is the ratio number.

Dilution Formula

When using U.S. Standard ounces as our unit of measure, a dilution formula is expressed like this, Final volume divided by ratio number = ounces to add to final volume container.

Dilution for a 32-ounce spray bottle

To figure out a dilution level to make a 32-ounce bottle of ready-to-use product, here’s the formula. 32 divided by ratio number = number of ounces to add to 32-ounce bottle. To correctly mix 3D’s Upholstery & Carpet Cleaner at a ratio of 1:16 the equation would look like this, 32 divided by 16 = 2 ounces per 32-ounce bottle.

Dilution for a 1-gallon jug

Using the same above formula, only substituting 128 ounces for 32 ounces but still using 16 as the ratio number, the dilution equation would look like this, 1-gallon = 128 ounces. 128 divided by ratio number = ounces per gallon.

To correctly mix 3D’s Upholstery & Carpet Cleaner at a ratio of 1:16 the equation would look like this, 128 divided by 16 = 8 ounces per gallon.

In simple terms, using a clean, 1-gallon mixing container, you add 8 ounces of upholstery & carpet cleaner concentrate and then fill the rest of the container with clean water and mix thoroughly. This will make 1-gallon of ready-to-use upholstery & carpet cleaner at a 1:16 dilution ratio.

Next you will want to pour this mixture into a clean spray bottle. To create a thick foam, you’ll also want a foaming spray head. A normal spray head will not work as well as a foaming spray head.

IMPORTANT: Always work on a cool surface in the shade.

Professional Technique Tip – Dry Extraction - Always start by vacuuming any upholstery or carpet to be cleaned. This is called dry extraction. The idea is to remove as much of any loose dirt possible by lifting it out of or off of the surface. By removing dry, loose dirt first – you don’t risk liquefying this dirt with your spray liquid cleaner and then having to remove it. It’s easier, faster, and more effective to remove loose dirt via air extraction or even via blowing out the fabric, carpet, or upholstery with compressed air than it is to remove it once it’s wet.

Step 1: After vacuuming, spray 3D Upholstery & Carpet Cleaner directly onto surface to be cleaned and immediately scrub the surface with a horsehair or textile brush. 

Step 2: Use a clean, absorbent cotton terrycloth towel or absorbent microfiber towel and wipe and blot the cleaner and any emulsified dirt off of and/or out of the surface. Repeat this step switching to a fresh, dry towel often to absorb and remove as much residue as possible.

Step 3: Re-vacuum surface to lift out any remaining residues and then give the surface a final wipe with a dry towel.

Step 4: After all interior surfaces have been cleaned, wiped and/or blotted dry, place an air mover, or fan inside car and turn to the highest setting. Roll windows down about 1 inch so the air mover or fan can circulate air in and out of the car to evaporate and remove any remaining moisture. Run fan for at least one hour in normal ambient temperatures and humidity. Longer for colder, moist climates.

Drier cleaning from rich, thick foam spray
